What is Vegetable Tanning?

The tanning of leather enables leather products to be used in various industries. This process ensures that leather is resistant to various conditions, acquires a beautiful texture, increases its flexibility and workability, and diversifies its color options. In addition to traditional tanning methods, sustainable production processes can be achieved by using environmentally friendly and natural tanning methods. Vegetable tanning is a traditional and natural tanning method.

Vegetable tanning is a tanning process that uses natural, plant-based substances to process and preserve leather. This process minimizes the use of chemicals and offers a more natural production process. The stages of vegetable tanning are as follows:

Preparation Stage: The leather is prepared by cleaning its hair and oils. This stage ensures that the leather is suitable for the tanning process.

Salting: The leather is subjected to a salting process to prevent the proliferation of bacteria and microorganisms. Additionally, the water content of the leather is reduced and preserved.

Cooling and Soaking: The salted leather is cooled and frozen, then soaked. The soaking process is done to increase the flexibility of the leather and to make tanning more effective.

Vegetable Tanning: In this stage, the leather is treated with natural plant extracts and resins. These substances are usually obtained from plants such as oak bark and cranberries. The effect of plant-based substances on the leather is to make the leather durable, flexible, and textured.

Drying and Shaping: After the tanning process is completed, the leather is dried and brought to the desired shape and size.

Coloring (Optional): Vegetable-tanned leather usually retains its natural color, but coloring can also be applied if desired.

Advantages:

-It is a natural and environmentally friendly process.

-It can increase the breathability of the leather.

-It leaves a natural texture and color on the leather.

-It can reduce the risk of allergic reactions to products.

Disadvantages:

-It takes longer than other tanning methods.

-Production cost is higher

-Vegetable tanning is a preferred method among those who produce traditional and handmade leather products because it focuses on achieving a natural and healthy result.
